There’s a lot that goes into laser hair removal which is why it tends to be a hot topic amongst Americans. Being the most commonly done cosmetic procedure in the United States, laser hair removal is an effective and easy way to not only remove nuisance hair, but also to have silky smooth skin as a side benefit.
Legs, face, arms, and bikini line are all common (but not exclusive) areas people receive hair treatment. If you’d like answers to more specific areas, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
The processes is very simple, highly concentrated lights (AKA lasers) targets and destroys hair follicles beneath the skin while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. The effectiveness of this procedure depends on the thickness and pigment of your hair. Darker hair is typically better for removal, regardless, the average patient will need 3-7 treatments to permanently remove hair.
Ideally, you want your skin to be as light as possible during treatment so some may wait until winter for the procedure to be done. However, we recommend you consult with us first before making that decision as everybody is different and waiting until winter may not even be of concern to you.
Preparing for laser hair removal is actually a very simple and an easy process. Due to the targeting of hair follicles beneath the skin, it is important to avoid plucking, waxing, and any sort of manual hair removal 2-4 weeks prior to your procedure. Doing so removes hair roots preventing the laser from permanently destroying them. It is also recommended you avoid sun exposure before (and after) treatment.
Recovery for laser hair removal is different for everyone but common side effects include, discomfort, swelling, as well as redness of the skin. Other side effects include blistering, infections, and scarring but are often rare if laser care is done by a professional.
This is true, unfortunately, you cannot do back to back procedures as this could cause long term damage to your skin. Every patient is different and our dermatologists will recommend what’s best for you, however; It’s good to note that most patients can have another treatment every 4-6 weeks.
All in all, lasers play a major roll in hair treatment and there’s been many technological advances in laser care recent years that allow the processes to be as easy and affordable as it is today. We hope this mini guide was useful to you and we wish you best of luck during your hair treatment journey!
